The existing Clubhouse was built in 1840 originally as a brewery. In 1872 it was converted to the Godstone Literary Institute with reading rooms for the local community. Godstone Club itself was formed in 1910 and in 1948 Sir Peter Greenwell made the building available to the village community. In 1964 the premises, together with the land which is now used for bowls and tennis, transferred to a charitable trust (Godstone Institute Charitable Trust). As stated in the Trust Deed: The objects of the Trust are to afford to the inhabitants of Godstone and the surrounding district the means of physical and mental training and recreation and social and intellectual development and mutual helpfulness through the medium of reading and recreation rooms, club rooms, recreations and entertainments in the Trust premises known as the Godstone Club and Institute and playing fields and sports grounds without distinction of sex or of political, religious or other opinions. Godstone Club Godstone Club is situated in the premises known as Godstone Club and Institute. It is the headquarters of the Godstone Branch of the Royal British Legion, the sports and other organisations affiliated to the Godstone Institute Charitable Trust. |
